CHARLES DE GOAL
****************
Patrick Blain (aka Charles de Goal) began playing music around 1973 as a bass player . The music around 1974-1976 was a real bore but suddenly came the punk movement and it was a real revelation to him (especially bands like Devo, Wire, XTC, Gang of Four). He bought a drum machine, a synthesizer, and formed a band named C.O.M.A. In 1978 they released an album on Flamingo Records (later becoming “New Rose”) which was described by the critics as a cross between Devo and the Residents. Looking for a more popish approch and not succeeding in doing so, they decided to break the band. Patrick Blain decide then to continue alone, playing most of the instruments, with the help of some friends for some parts (Philippe Huart and Claude Lamamy, the 2 being former members of C.O.M.A). A name was chosen “Charles de Goal”, and the first album (Algorythmes) was issued in 1980 by the, at that time, very young label “New Rose”. Amazingly, the record did very well and even in countries such as Germany or the Netherlands. It sold around 15.000 copies. Charles de Goal never played live at that time (not until 1985). It was just a question of how recreating on stage what he played alone. A second record (Ici l’ombre) was issued in 1981 but was less well received (too dark and not very well recorded). In 1982, Charles de Goal was part of the “Danse Macabre” project which ended up in a mini-album and is now considered as a gothic must. There was a 3 years pause before releasing “3” in 1984, a much more accessible album which had lots of airplay in France A live band was formed and Charles de Goal went touring but he was never pleased with the results. Then, in 1986, came the last known album (Double Face).

After issuing the « Commemoration » compilation in 1989, Charles de Goal went back to the studio in order to record new material. The album was completed in 1992. Unfortunately, New Rose at that precise moment went bankrupt. After one year of searching for a new record company with no results, Charles de Goal decided to call it quit. This never released album can now be found free with the new reissue of “Algorythmes”.

During 2005 Garage Records was going to reissue a remastered version of “Algorythmes” plus “Revolution” (the album that never went out).

Shortly after the reissue, Patrick Blain was contacted by two people in charge of the “sound signature” for Agnes B (French stylist). They had the idea of a reunion concert in Paris. The date was to be March 9th, so the rehearsals began by mid-February. The band being now formed of Patrick Blain (lead vocal and guitar), AE (guitar and computers), Jean-Philippe Brouant (drums and backing vocal) and Etienne Lebourg (bass). The concert was a total success. At last, Charles de Goal had found the band that he was dreaming of for the stage.

Just before the reissue of “Algorythmes” Garage Studios had already proposed recording sessions for a new album which should be out in 2007. So, what was conceived as a one-shot concert lead to a rematerialization of Charles de Goal.

WARUM JOE
**********
Since the beginning of the 80s, Warum Joe a parisian independent, antisocial and totally discreet group has always evolved outside of the mainstream. Even if they"re considered by most as pioneers of the
French punk-rock scene, they appeared seldom on stage (60 concerts so far…) and always played music for fun and decided to go their own way.

All the group members are amateurs, in the noble sense of the word, free of the music industry constraints and, therefore, delivering a high quality independent production. From their 15 LP"s several titles are French punk-rock scene classics ("Datcha", "Bogota", " A.F.P.", "Res Publica"...).

"Warum Joe" in 3 points :

Their sound : straight forward, direct mixing machine sound, guitars and a minimalistic voices closed to spoken words, they"re at a corner between the Ramones, Métal Urbain, Wire and Suicide. Their sound is an alien made of punk-rock 77 and electro-punk. Their visual world : Punk ! Check out their posters and LP"s with this unique subversive punk design. Their lyrics : Concise, lucid, sour, they are politically engaged.
Provocative and defining a sharp description of the modern world

JB WIZZZ / BIPPP COMPILATION
***************************
Increasingly detached from the original punk formula, the modern and arty youth of the early eighties set itself to jettison a MOVEMENT that had lost much of the nihilistic and exhilarating energy of its halcyon days, stuck, as it was, in an endless and noisy regression.
No Future was the motto of an artform without a cause that no longer echoed with the mindset of the time.

Disheartened but eager to experiment and create, a new wave of French musician followed the beacon of Jacno"s seminal 79 hit "Rectangle". THE visionary, digital coup de grâce CAME courtesy of a former punk AND dealt the Rickenbacker and Fender era a fatal blow. The cold and robot-like bips of analogic keyboards took over. Casio, Korg MS 10, Arp Omni were the new paraphernalia of the növö generation. The ideal conveyers of its retro-futurist elegance and self-professed cold arrogance. They were pinnacles and symbols which turned as potent a fetiche as the electric guitar in the fifties or the laptop in the nineties.

BIPP recalls the glory of a selected few. The cream of the crop of the shooting stars and cult band WHICH followed the footsteps of Kas Product, Mathematiques Modernes or Charles de Goal.
